I would like to start by saying Black Lives Matter and Black Girl Magic is real. That is a fact for me, and it will be a fact for my daughter. I have been debating on how exactly I want to go about this post, because I have a lot to say (nothing new there), and I want to be very intentional with my words and make sure I articulate the importance of this. Black people are STILL fighting for basic human rights to just stay alive, but they are also going through constant education at home to make sure they live to see another day. What I mean by that is from a young age every black person is giving various talks that white people just don't have to go through.
These talks range from work ethic (you have to work twice as hard to get to half of what "they" have), extra reinforcement/ confidence building (your skin is beautiful/ your hair is beautiful), safety (keep your hands on the wheel at all times, be extra careful of your surroundings, etc). Resilience is basically intertwined in our DNA. Although we are strong individuals - I will teach her that it is okay to still be soft. The world will throw things at her because as a black woman you are presumed to be able to handle any and all things, but I will let her know it’s okay to lighten the load and not be superwoman.
It’s important for the generations coming up to understand how powerful and beautiful our race is. It’s important to know OUR history. The history classes and books that are taught aren’t always correct. It’s up to us as a race to educate the younger generation about all things Black. We are the backbones to it all. We create magic in every aspects of life itself.
The world will try to tell her who she is or stereotype her because of her complexion. It is my job to let her know she is worthy, beautiful, smart, special, and she can be whoever it is she wants - no matter of her skin color.
Society will try to tell her is she less than simply due to her skin color. Society will try to tell her that her hair is unruly. Society will try to mold her into a watered down version of herself just to make them comfortable. I will tell her she’s more than enough, her hair/skin/everything is beautiful, and she is perfect and whole the way she is.
I want her to see the greatness in Black from the womb until the end of time. She will be mixed, as am I, but society will see her she is Black and she will take pride in her mixedness/Blackness. Although we go through A LOT as a race there is no other race we would rather be. I will say it again - we are the backbones to it all.
To my beautiful babygirl - you are perfect the way you are and don't let anyone tell you different. You are smart. You are unique. You are beautiful. You are greatness. You are Black and that alone is a super power. Society won't always love you, but I will.
