I went to a specialist years ago for allergies and somehow left there with a prescription for anxiety and depression. I took the medicine without doing any research because I just trusted the doctor's opinions. I was confused about why he gave me the medicine because it had nothing to do with what I came in for, but again I trusted that the doctor knew more than I did. After a few weeks, I started getting headaches and actually feeling anxious and depressed. You are supposed to ween off the medicine I was prescribed but I just stopped taking it cold turkey (do not recommend for others as I am not a doctor and all that stuff!)
Once I stopped taking them I decided to look into at all holistic and natural ways to supplement that medicine. Of course everyone tells you the basics like better diet, better sleep, exercise, time outside, etc, but there are herbs out there that can really help. Below are some of my go-to for anxiety and seasonal depression.
Magnesium
Magnesium assist with overall brain function and mood. I was introduced to magnesium when I was started getting stress migraines. I was told to increase the intake of magnesium rich foods such as salmon, avocado, peanut butter, oatmeal, yogurt, etc. I then switched over to Calm gummies and now take the Moon Juice Magnesi-om powder. I can feel the difference from when I take magnesium in the morning and when I don't.
Ashwagandha
Awhwagandha is one of the best known antidepressant out there. During the colder times I always realize I have a dip in energy, so increasing my intake when the winter approaches really helps keep me level headed.
Moon Juice also has a great supplement called "SuperYou" that has ashwagandha in pill form if you do not want to take it in powder form.
Light therapy lamp
The light therapy lamp is just an added benefit when compared to magnesium and ashwagandha. We all know it feels like midnight around 4pm, so the light therapy helps offset by mimic the natural outdoor lighting. I keep it on my desk as I work. I use the light in 30-1 hour increments, and typically in the morning and early afternoon.
Another disclaimer: I am not a doctor - please consult a doctor or do your own research before taking anything recommended. These products have worked for me, but everyone is different. Please do what is best for you.
