My younger sister asked me what advice I would have for someone in their early twenties, and one of those things was live your life by design. Which then morphed in to my new philosophy of life - design not default.
Designing my dream life and not living it by the means of what others presume it should or could be. I actively debunk of a lot of generational thought processes and ways of doing things. I do not live by life by the default setting of the others before me. I do not have to part take in "traditional" ways of life.
When I am stuck on what decisions to make I notice myself repeating "design not default" to ensure I am doing what I, Bianca, really want to do and not what it "right" in the eyes of society or my family.
There are various examples of how the default way of living that isn't necessarily true anymore - some of the biggest are views on college being the only way to land a good job and/or the power dynamics in a household/family. There are unspoken (and spoken) rules in society that one is supposed to follow and if they don't they are seen as an outcast. Anyone that does not take the same path is looked at differently.
I am here to say ... fuck all that. Excuse my language to the younger audience, but it is really the only way to get this point across the right way. Design your life the way YOU want it to be. YOU are the one that has to wake up everyday and live it. Everyones path is very different - so what is "right" and "wrong" is purely subjective.
Live your life by design and not default. That is the advice I gave my sister and that is the advice that I am giving you on this lovely Sunday.
