I am an avid reader of all things, but in the last couple of years, business and self-help/transformation books have crowded my shelves. While looking at my book collection I realized that the majority, if not all, of my books were written by white women or men. It made me take a step back and ask myself two questions. 1. Do I have these books because that is all that is available? 2. Are these the books that I gravitate towards/how is it possible to have this many books with barely any color?
This brought me to a spiral of realization. One of the biggest is representation matters - always, all ways.
This couldn't be all that was available. I realized, no, it wasn't all that was available in the market, but it was the majority. I also realized that black authors and creators aren't in the big stores most of the time. They are selling on their websites and/or only available on Amazon. They are self-publishing due to the market not wanting to take a chance on them. See below for some of my favorite authors
